¡Autentica! Afro-Latinx Women in the African Diaspora is finally here! I am excited about its release. The idea for this book began five years ago when I started researching the stories of Afro-Latinx women. I could not find any text on the topic. I am excited to honor these 24 fearless trailblazers, women who have individually or collectively owned their African identities in the Americas. Some of the stories are harsh and compelling as I spotlight their rise to notoriety, resilience, and loss as I share a riveting snapshot of their lives. I am writing about women who embraced both worlds’ best and took steps to change how they lived. Some took risks that opened the doors to pain, inequitable practices, and the undercurrent of racism to embrace inclusion as they shared their gifts. Still, others struggled to find themselves; they made themselves small and excelled at fitting in their communities. I am proud to be the storyteller of ¡Autentica! Afro-Latinx Women in the African Diaspora.

I am an author of Garifuna descent from Belize, Central America. The Garifuna people arrived from West Africa to the island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (Yurumein ) around 1635, after they were exiled by the British in 1796 to the Caribbean coast of Roatan, Honduras. After the Garifuna people settled in Honduras, many decided to migrate and built communities in Belize, Guatemala, and Bluefield Nicaragua along the Caribbean Sea in coastal towns and villages. My father’s people came to Belize on November 19, 1802. We were not an enslaved group. Garifunas are tri-lingual and speak English, Spanish, and the Carib language, an Arawakan language. On May 18, 2001, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared the Garifuna language, dance, and music in Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua to be a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.”

I am excited to release the first children’s coloring book ever written on the Mennonites of Belize. The Mennonites have settled in Belize for more than 60 years and have lived a modest lifestyle without electricity or machinery in their self-supporting farming methods.
